The iX5 and the Cayenne might share the same basic purpose and are similar size but based on my drive of the iX3 compared to the Cayenne I reckon the iX5 will be based very much on comfort rather than handling. I’m expecting it to be quieter on all road surfaces and absorb imperfections better but it will understeer when pushed and become unsettled the harder you drive it. If none of those things bother you then I reckon the iX5 will be hard to beat, the tech on the BMW is so well sorted and I reckon it will probably get closer to claimed range than the Cayenne will.

I can’t credit that cars are approaching 3 ton, the sooner solid state batteries start production the better.

I currently have an iX3 (arrived about three months ago), and I went to the dealer launch of the iX5, but if I was choosing between the iX5 60 M Sport and the Cayenne S, it would be the Porsche all day long. In fact, I'm surprised the price difference is so small.
I’m in the US and the price difference is substantial, (Tariffs?). I priced out a base cayenne with functional options and it came in at $133,000. The IX 5 will come in at approximately $100,000.

Yes, the increase in prices due to tariffs is 7-10 percent with Porsche in the US.
What did you decide? Both are great vehicles for what they offer.

I specced out a fully loaded iX5 M60, which is their top-tier model, on the Swedish configurator and it comes in at around €120-130k. Speccing a reasonably equipped Cayenne S gets you to around €155k. Now, that being said, in my opinion, you shouldn't even compare the M60 to the S because the M60 is their top-tier model meaning it should essentially be compared to a Turbo.

But this is comparing apples to cookies anyway, because they are two different cars built for different purposes. You're paying a premium for a Porsche because of the branding and the driving experience. If you just want a five-seater electric SUV, you have plenty of options. So essentially, someone looking at an iX5 should probably be looking at the base model either way, because with the M60's power output, you'll probably end up feeling like it is a house you're driving down the canyon roads more than anything else.

I don't agree that the M60 should be compared to the Turbo, it being BMW's top model or not. Spec wise it's basically a Cayenne S.

I think buying a ‘prestige’ car is about far more than price. If it was, then we would be on the fake Range Rover Jaecoo forum. If you prefer the looks of the Beemer and are not looking for the driving characteristics of a Porsche then the IX5 is for you. I far prefer the looks of my Coupe and everything else so are happy to pay the price for that.

Personally, I have had plenty of Merc‘s, Lexus, Range Rovers (unfortunately a Jaguar) and a BMW. I found the BMW uninspiring and the interior boring - it didn’t drive any differently than the Merc’s despite being sold as a ’drivers car’.

BMW have definitely invested a lot in battery technology and efficiency and so the iX5 has more range than the Cayenne. I do wonder how many £ 100k+ cars are regularly used for journeys in the UK well in excess of 300 miles or do they sit outside the directors office whilst the junior staff are clocking up the mileage in Chinese EV’s

It's not the "M60". It's the 60 xDrive M Sport. The M Performance model will be launched next year, and it will be called the "M70". After that there will be a "full" M version.

which is their top-tier model,
It's also the lowest tier model, too, as it's their only one at the moment!

Like I said, the 60 xDrive is just a regular model. The M Performance model, the M70, will be launched next year. The full on X5M will be launched in 2028, and *that* should be compared to the Turbo.

Yes I meant the iX5 with the M package. I wouldn't compare it to the Cayenne Turbo.

I'll try another iX5 config when I'm behind my PC. I don't know how I came at 145k euros :/ Maybe I was configuring the regular X5?

The Cayenne EV is very, very comfortable in normal/comfort mode. Feels a little too "plush" at times but when you put it in Sports + it starts to get really uncomfortable on some roads. Cayenne EV has a good spread between settings and I would say (21 inch) Comfort up to Sport are generally useable on all roads in UK (we have plenty of potholes).

I don’t disagree, mine is on 22” and I regularly drive it in Sport mode and don’t have an issue with the comfort it offers but this isn’t the same thing as saying the iX5 might be geared even more towards the comfort than the Porsche. One thing I will be surprised is if the iX5 isn’t quieter, BMWs in general are quieter than Porsches and I don’t think this the iX5 will be any different.

As for the comparisons between the two with others feeling the iX5M60 should be compared to the Cayenne Turbo, the M60 is only the top model at the moment but once the M version is released then it because the equivalent to the Cayenne S in its line up plus power wise these two are closer. Only my opinion but BMW aren’t going after Porsche with the iX5 at the moment for them it’s all about range this the high battery pack.

Thanks for clarifying, didn't know that! Basically what I was trying to say is that I still think it is two different purposes for these cars either way.

Of course. It's not even close.

It would certainly explain why you got the spec to the price you did. The ICE X5 *does* have an M Performance model on sale already, which has a base price of €130,000 in the Netherlands, and that is indeed called the "M60" ("M60e", to be precise), which is a PHEV.

Just to clarify. The only iX5 on sale at the moment is the 60 xDrive. It is not sport orientated at all, other than you can add the M Sport package.

Next year BMW will launch the iX5 M70, which is an M Performance model (M "light").

The year after that, BMW will launch the full M version of the iX5, likely to be called "X5M Electric".

The iX5 may be quieter, but I can tell you that the iX3 is extremely noisy on the motorway, something that was also picked up in road tests.

The iX5 M60 doesn't even exist, and never will, so I don't know why people keep mentioning it.

There is one iX5 that has been launched so far. The "iX5 60 xDrive". Next year, the "sporty" M Performance model will be launched, and that will be badged "iX5 M70".

BMW launched the ICE/PHEV X5 side-by-side with the iX5, and they share the same CLAR architecture. In terms of the X5, the "sporty" M Performance model has been launched, and that is called the "X5 M60e", but that's a PHEV. Unlike the iX3 and the X3, BMW decided to launch the latest X5 as an ICE/PHEV/BEV all sharing the same platform.

In 2028 there will be a full M version of both the X5 and the iX5, and both will be badged "X5M".
