But unlikely any cheaper
I priced out a top trim AMG EQS, with a bunch more tech and luxury features than my Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo even offered and the EQS still came in significantly cheaper at $162K total (here is such a car, check out the specs and features at a glace/thumbnails on that page, like VR HUD, much larger screens, 9 degree RAS, dashcam, heated/ventilated seats with massage front AND back, 100W USB charging (vs. 7.5W Taycan has), Matrix headlights if hacked to EU spec would also display signage on the road in front of the car - with Taycan Matrix are nice and still worth hacking in NA but nothing like this, etc - just seem more tech features from this century). Full disclosure, I drove the regular EQS and it was lacking the sportiness for my taste (too much a luxury boat), but if AMG fixed that with a more sporty suspension and some other drive characteristics, EQS might actually be a really good alternative for @kort. They are pretty much the same size, MB is bigger on the inside and appears to have more recent tech, Porsche has more sporty handling and performance (though without Launch Control something tells me the AMG EQS will out-accelerate even a Turbo S, whether highway passing/merging manuver or race track coming out of corners) and definitely looks much better (at least pre-refresh Taycans). I wish I knew how reliable the MB phone app is (sorry, still irked that I couldn't remotely preheat my Taycan recently, and remembering doing some road tripping this past summer when I couldn't use the app for hours at a time even though car and phone had full strength LTE - I happen to enjoy the remote pre-heat/cool and while I used to take it for granted in my Teslas, Taycan has made it a feature that I pay attention to as far as its reliability).

AMG EQS was actually a close second (after Taycan Turbo CT) on my new car list when shopping most recently. I found an allocation for the Taycan first (took me over a year just to find an allocation, 20 months first deposit to delivery). I'm very happy with the Taycan, but if AMG did make the EQS good for an occasional track day, I would have probably been happy too (ok, one EQS issue for me though not for most people - charging port on passenger rear, EXTREMELY inconvenient in my garage situation where we park our cars with passenger side super close to the wall). Who knows, my Taycan replacement might be an AMG EQS, though I only got my Taycan less than a year ago and very happy with it, so there is still time for all manufacturers to come up with stuff I want.

why would I swap a known entity for a lateral move to an unknown one?
Aren't the 4 other brands you are considering unknown to you? I think they are all on 1st gen tech as well.…. A lateral move at the top end of the food chain isn’t a bad one IMO ??

try reading from the beginning
My apologies, I didn’t realize you were the OP.

if you’re intent upon not getting into another Tycan, but want to be in the same ballpark, I would suggest at least test driving the E-Tron GT. And you’d save a bit of coin as well.
Best

Very different cars from one another. I would almost not even bunch the Taycan together with other EVs, as I don’t really see it as an Ev. It’s more of a Porsche that happens to be electrically powered.

Just to add MORE data points beyond my prior long winded reply -- Depending on your time frame and your budget, Polestar will be revealing the final USA spec/details on the Polestar 4 on the 31st January, as per today's social media. That car should arrive Q3/4 of this year, start around $60k USD, top off around $80k USD with Performance trim at a 3.8s spring to 60MPH. It is most likely my replacement for my '21 Taycan CT -- and should be really nice. I loved my polestar 2 vehicles.... I plan to drive a 3 SUV but I prefer sporty sedans, and I think the 4 blends that "coupe SUV" style with muscular angles etc. Cheers!

Maybe look at the MB EQE sedan. The EQS was a very large floating isolation chamber. Quite the opposite of the Taycan's road feel. The EQE is about the same exterior dimensions as the Taycan with better interior packaging. Lots of configuration options. Similar range to the Taycan. Lots less money. Decent balance of ride and handling. It was #2 on my list. The Taycan won out on it's chassis and looks.
The EQE base is 288hp. Low and thus slow coming from a Taycan.

A 350 isn't too far off from a RWD Taycan and a lot less expensive. The 500 version isn't too far off from a 4S, and a lot less expensive. The AMG isn't quite Turbo quick, but close, and again, a whole lot less expensive. I didn't get to drive the AMG version but the 500 was quick enough on the road, but just didn't provide the road feel that the Taycan does (not to mention that it's borderline ugly). But it is a high end EV alternative that is almost a bargain. Not that anything at 100k is a bargain.

I’m also interested in the Polestar 4 (and 5). Curious why you’d want to jump from your CT though?

Of the 100+ cars that I've owned, plus the ~20 my wife has had, we've had a dozen Tesla vehicles. We've had 2x Polestar 2, 3x Volvo XC40/C40 BEVs, and a smattering of other cars. The '21 CT that I have now is my 3rd Taycan. And I've owned 2x Audi eTron Gt. I change cars like most people change their bed sheets; So you could say I've sample them all.

Short list on the Taycan for me...
Pros: Styling, Handling, Versatility (wagon)
Cons: Tech, Ergo, "Lack of EV centric"

Longer explanation: I'm a huge fan of one pedal driving. IMO that is a huge miss by Porsche to not even offer that. Beyond that, I find the native navigation only "acceptable" -- my BMW i4/iX vehicles were superior. But the best nav is Google, and that is baked into Volvo/Polestar products. It was also in my '24 Hummer EV SUV that I had for 3 weeks/800 miles, though they underpowered that processor sadly. I'm hopeful that the next ten PCM will improve being Google AAOS, but from what I've seen in photos, they kept the skin, and it lacks with multi point routing in a few ways. Clunky.

My Porsche vehicles have never been good about showing doors locked/windows closed. Nothing is Tesla/Rivian, but Volvo/Polestar/BMW/Mini are a close 2nd in that realm, with regards to app latency, accuracy, etc. I liked my Tesla vehicles for tech/charging network, but I hated the build quality. I liked the Volvo/Polestar products for build quality and tech, but they lacked in fun to drive.

So in conclusion, I am hopeful that the Polestar 4 will be the answer there. On this new platform there is hope that the "performance" version will be better than the 2 CMA platform was for me. I don't expect it to be as fun to drive as a Porsche, but my daily commute is stop/go no freeway 12 miles each way 35mph max posted limit. The rest of my driving is often freeway, or errands. If I go for a sporty drive it is rare, so comfort trumps performance most days. At this stage in my life I'll sacrifice a little steering feedback for something with a nicer infotainment system etc

My lease is also due to end in August. I love my Taycan, but the model's current price point and follow on depreciation is just not worth the money, IMO. My front running choice today is the BMW I4 RWD for the following reasons:
  • Very well spec'd its MSRP is about $55k-$60K less than a similarly equipped Taycan RWD
  • The new iDrive 8 UI is far superior to the Taycan UI.
  • Its Driver Assistance Pro is equal to or better than Tesla's Auto Pilot and puts Innodrive to shame
  • Range is similar but a bit more (EPA 283-301 miles). Online reviews document the range
  • 0-60 is very close to the Taycan RWD but a bit slower (.3 seconds)
  • DC charging max is 200kW, less than the Taycan but I have never been able to achieve greater than 174 kW in three years of DC charging in the Northeast.
  • Grand Coupe's Five door hatch back configuration has great capacity for big items in the trunk
  • A standard equipment back up camera that you can actually use without distortion
  • Much easier egress and ingress
  • Climate control vents that one can actually move manually
  • On demand battery preconditioning
  • NACS charging on Tesla SC network later this year. Porsche is not slated until sometime 2025.
  • Reviews have been consistently good
While it will never handle as well as a Taycan, my mission is as a DD and $60k lower price is hard to ignore.

Have you considered a Model Y? As practical DD cars go, hard to beat. You can add an instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel, NACS charging already available (and includes supercharger V1 and V2 locations which will never be available to BMW), for an extra $3,500 it will beat a Taycan Turbo S 0-60 outside of launch mode, without the performance update it will still beat Taycan RWD even in launch mode. Easier ingress/egress, good range, Tesla Auto Pilot, OTA updates, etc.

I drive the same platform car Zeekr 001. Really good, minus the software, particularly the self driving feature... The 140kWh battery with 750km real world range is out of this world...

If you are going to lease, there are some really good deals on EVs. If you shop it really hard, there are Etron GTs under $1000 a month.

EQE AMG 53 is a really fun car, the standard EQE is really cheap inside.

As far as Lucid, I was at a showroom and saw the internal inventory list. There are MY2022 cars still in inventory that they cant move. You can probably work out a deal with them even more than they are offering
