this is what happens when they dont control the whole software ecosystem. I think BMW's Neue Klass is going to fix this for them.
BMW can already do OTA software updates in their existing cars with iDrive 8/8.5. The updates usually takes around 15-30 minutes in my experience.

OTA would be nice but what I really don’t like is the typical android philosophy. Look at apple, hardware is looked after for many, many years before they become a legacy product. In Macan EV, barely 2 years. Latest software can only be installed on MY 26. Yes, not all functions will be an available on older apple products, but you still can install the latest software. Porsche is neither in full control of software nor hardware components. VW synergies and outsourcing (supplier were previously part of the success) make this so much more difficult.

And it will get much worse, Mercedes started autonomous driving in the 70ies and were one or the first one to receive approval for autonomous level 3. The in house solution is now abandoned due to costs and reverted back to level 2. Level 4 will come from third party as Mercedes doesn’t have the risk capital to develop. I would assume Level 4 is the next big thing, I certainly would welcome it for those boring hours on motorways, in particular at 70 mph. As of current, no German car manufacturer at the time of Level 4 arrival will have control over hardware or software (including BMW). They will become the workbench for China and US.

A 1.5 hour software update is not "minor". It's a shame Porsche still cannot, on their 3rd EV, in 2026, not be able to do OTA updates.
Why I said minor is because it is smaller compared to the pre-delivery update of the Macan EV launch. The last update was apparently significant enough that it had to run overnight to complete.

If the update is a system update rather than say an infotainment one, then I wouldn’t want to risk it OTA. 1.5 hrs for an OTA is a long time to totally depend on a sim and risk bricking the car due to an incomplete install.

I cannot understand why Porsche seem incapable of providing say map updates - my Macan has had no map updates since new 16 months ago. They buy in the maps from Here - my Range Rover used the same software and was updated regularly and provided speed cameras locations. I know why European cars don’t have that, but Porsche could legally provide it to say UK cars.

Well, apple does it and it works well. First package is downloaded completely, stored on dedicated disk partition and only installed if plugged in or sufficient battery. Car may have different legislation's as car would not be usable for time of update process.

No idea in regards to maps, I thought I saw some OTA updates during brief ownership. Might be mistaken. Yes, Range Rover deactivates/activates speed camera location depending which country you are driving through. Political correctness nonsense from VW.

Trying to get back on topic; my order has reached milestone 3 today so it feels like there will not be another regression. Delivery due 20 August to Houston USA which is same day from the sea port of delivery.
That’s brilliant news.

Confession - the is my first (potential) Porsche purchase and new to this forum and have been really disappointed with the lack of comms from Porsche generally. I put down a deposit in Feb 26 for the Cayenne EV and have heard absolutely nothing since. Is this level of comms normal for Porsche or is it dealer specific? I have been dabbling with the various spec options online but I haven't been asked for anything regarding my preferences. I heard that the dealership sales man was going on a Cayenne test drive in Spain earlier this month but no updates. I also had hoped to get a test drive before finalising my preferences - is that too hopeful? BTW - enjoying the Porsche energy and loyalty on this forum.

It is dealer specific. My dealer/salesperson has been very responsive and keeps me updated about allocation timing, when things lock etc.

You might want to push them and ask if there is an allocation and more specific timelines. These cars are not GT3 RSes, Porsche should be making a lot of them.

As frankchn says, it’s very much dealer and sales person dependent. Unfortunately Track Your Dreams isn’t currently available in the UK for Cayenne EV’s (so I’m told). This would normally keep you updated.

I would ask the sales team (perhaps a different salesman) where in the process your order is. I ordered my Coupe on 1st May and the freeze was not long after. I received the VIN 2 weeks later and the car is currently scheduled for delivery mid July.

Something isn’t right as you have paid a deposit 4 months ago and haven’t received a signed order. You should get a signed order with all the options and prices confirmed just after they took the £ 3k deposit. If the dealer has a confirmed build allocation then they should tell you the option freeze date.

I believe the dealer ‘launch’ in Spain was months ago, although they may have had more than one. My dealers team went out before May.

The demos have arrived in UK dealers, but as covered in earlier post, they are not allowed to register the cars until 26th June so no test drives.

Good luck sorting it as it very much appears you have a very inefficient salesman to say the least

My dealer is also not very forthcoming in regards to updates but you should have gotten at least order confirmation with specs to sign. I would call your dealer ASAP not to miss freeze date.

While waiting for car, I watched an old Top Gear (Grand Tour) episode. Cayenne S is more powerful than Urus - just to put things into perspective.

I find your timeline very interesting... in theory we should be very much in sync. I paid my deposit 27th April, with a predicted delivery for mid July. I have since heard delivery is now more likely end of July. I have asked a few times about a VIN but apparently there's nothing as of yet.
I did receive a screenshot that confirms the order in the system but have just noticed the "Freeze PT" date to be 9.06.26... Do we think this is the Spec Freeze/Lock date? If so then i'm quite confused as i was encouraged to complete my spec at the end of April due to imminent "Spec Lock" date for that delivery slot... I did even query a wheel swap on the 11th May but was told my order was locked...

In conclusion. There are no consistencies when ordering a Porsche? :)

With estimated delivery mid/end July your car should be build by end of June (app. 1 month for factory to Emden, Emden to Sheerness, Customs, etc). End of April for spec lock seems correct, if not slightly late. Build date however may change depending on spec changes, happened to me previously. For sure there must be some flexibility around spec lock in unforeseen circumstances which would explain some outliers.

As for consistency, majority of orders are either entirely new order (longer wait) or taking over dealer slot before spec lock (fast). @Scribble looks like new order.

The only actual dates I have are freeze date 12th May and enter body shop on 11th June. The estimated dates for completion of build and leave compound is 26th. Enter Emden is 6 days later and exit port 5 days later. Then it looks like nothing more than guessing as it had 5 days Emden to Sheerness which I think is a hangover to the earlier shipping issue.

Thank you to everyone for their comments - really helpful. I'm on to the dealer today!
