New to forum. Don’t kick me off for asking this…Porsche guy here. Have 2021 Taycan RWD (my 5th Porsche). Truly have had a passion for Porsches since my teens. Previously owned a Tesla Model 3 performance. Considering trading the Taycan for a Model S. Love the Taycan but the range is not great especially in winter. Live in rural area and commute quite a bit. No charging station on my commute. Even with performance battery plus can barely make it to work and back in the winter. Only 65 miles each way. Summer-no problem.

Anyone gone back to a Tesla after owning a Taycan. Thoughts?

Taycan:
-no better looking car on the road
-compliments daily
-good build quality/handling-all the stuff Porsche guys appreciate
-best AC in any vehicle ever owned
-some quirks, tech not as good as tesla
-kids complain it’s cramped in back
-what is that strange ticking noise?
-don’t know what it is with keyfob battery-but constantly needs replacing
-vehicle occasionally locks me out
-2 electric system failure lights-fixed at dealership
-otherwise reliable

Model S
-great tech and range
-comfortable for family of 5
-better computer than is car
-dated styling (my previous M3P felt like a 7 year old car after 2 years)
-much better app
-that acceleration
If it's range you're looking for go with a Lucid. Much better looking than a Tesla, stunning interior, just as fast if not faster and crazy range. Having owned a Tesla Model S in the past, which I happily sold for my Taycan, there's no way I'd buy another one--the company is simply too mercurial.

I was curious about the exact %, so I looked on-line and found references to 10%, 20%, 70%, and 75% -- as well as the lesser of those or the SOC upon taking delivery.
Either way, when I then looked up the Tesla map for my itinerary (PDX > Mt Hood > Beaverton > PDX), yep, many choices for Superchargers!
(Although to be fair to CCS DCFC, many choices too, especially EA -- some of which might actually work?)
I just checked with my contact at Hertz corporate, who said "Return at or above the delivery SOC to avoid a $35 fee."

I like the timeline, but to be honest I wouldn't buy an aftermarket adapter for a high voltage / high current connection.

An aftermarket adapter might pose the same problems as those we saw with NEMA 14-50 plugs, only at higher voltages and current.
I bought the Tesla adapter for use at Destination Tesla charging. It worked fine, and I’m here to tell you about it. Now, that was an A/C charger, I believe.

I owned a 2020 S Performance and a 2023 Taycan GTS side by side for a while. Both are excellent in different ways. They are comparable only in that they are very similar in size and weigh and have 4 doors. I sold the Tesla recently because I don't need the interior space (sounds like you do). The Taycan's range is plenty (it seems something wrong if you can barely do 130 mile round trip in the winter). On a road trip I have the time to play around trying to get an EA session started (no kids asking "are we there yet?", although my wife has expressed a certain hate for EA). The Taycan is markedly better to drive. Fantastic on the road. And for me that made it the better car to keep. It's shortcomings weren't important. Your situation would seem to tilt toward a Model S. I should add that I am probably biased in my opinion of Tesla. My car was well screwed together and in 3.5 years and 27,000 miles had no rattles and needed no service. So yes, if I needed what the Tesla offers I would go back (but probably never will).

Yep, I have a Tesla Tap and it works fine. I'm talking about high DC voltages and high current situations, not 240V AC.

The opposite. I was just about convinced that the Model 3 was an "acceptable" EV, until I drove the Taycan. Now I can never own a Tesla.

So, wait - you're saying that a $140K+ car is better overall than a $55K car?

NO WAY!!!! (cue eyeroll)

I’m still not getting a clear idea of range for the Taycan. I’m currently in a 2014 p85 S, and range has dropped down to 330km (at 90% charge, vs 385km brand new).

What range are you typically getting with the GTS? Generally my commute is an even mix of highway and street.

Sure more is better, but I found the range in my S to be good enough…especially considering how it’s dropped over the years, and during winter months. I don’t think I could handle anything with less range

Seriously considered a Taycan several times over the past two years, never owned one though numerous other EVs. I went back to gas, it that counts? I’ll be back in an EV when the kinks are worked out.

My range with the GTS, at 100%, calculates to between 280 and 290 miles (roughly half highway going along with traffic, half local. I do not drive like a loon). This is all in warm weather though and varies depending on recent driving (I think Porsche uses the last 300 miles in calculating estimated range). Range is more than enough. If you drove a 911 like you were on a race track your mileage would suffer. Taycan is no different. I would think a safe estimate of range with the Taycan, under most circumstances, would be 250 miles (400km). The Taycan is no Model S - and vice versa. The Taycan does have enough range. It does not have an adequate charging system. That's the drawback if you road trip. But even that is manageable.

Thanks. That’s what I was seeing on other posts, and was hoping for. Like I said, I started around 400km brand new in my S. After 9yrs it’s 330….factor in winter range, and I’m around 200 and change (worst case I see a 30% range hit in the colder months). That’s borderline for me. Whatever I pick up next I will try to keep just as long. Thanks for the info
