On a different thread some time ago I said that my current insurer (Admiral) declined to insure the Coupe as it was “too new”. I have a fairly competitive quote from Porsche which I’ll probably stick with (cover is far more extensive). I think this is the explanation and UK owners may find this of interest If their current insurers decline to provide cover or heavily load the quotation.

Apparently Porsche is aware of a potential issue with ABI codes not being uploaded yet or being incorrect and so Porsche insurance are now working to be very competitive particularly with the Cayenne EV.

The ABI codes are :-
  • Manufacturers provide detailed vehicle specifications to Thatcham Research, which then assigns the 8-digit ABI code and a 1–50 Insurance Group Rating.
Might well have been resolved by now, although this came from a recent document.

Admiral (online) can't currently quote for any Cayenne EV.

Porsche (online) won't quote unless you have a GPS tracker and the car must already be registered which isn't helpful.

I'm sure Admiral / others will get their act together soon but the prospect of being forced to have a tracker (if true) on a car that is trackable via Porsche Connect is a little off IMHO.

I have a quote from Porsche insurance. I had a call - the agent knew that the Cayenne EV’s were not on the system but they had a ‘workaround’ so I have a quote fixed until mid July. You don’t need a reg so I’m not sure where you got that from.

My dealer said roughly 70% of the cars they sell are insured by Admiral so were alarmed when I said they declined to insure Cayenne EV’s. It all makes sense now if the car hasn’t been rated by Thatcham.

When attempting on line you need to put in a reg - that's what I wrote, hence the comment.

Can you share the premium?

Cost of tracker (PVTS+) to be added on top. I had it until Admiral told me I didn't.

Thatcham don't determine the insurance group either. This is determined by a panel from ABI (Association of British Insurers) and Lloyd's Market Association (LMA). Thatcham provide data for the panel to assess. Given the list price the band will be the highest - 50 - I guess.

Same gap existed when the Taycan first launched but by the time customer cars where ready for delivery the insurance companies had the necessary grouping / band to assign.

I tired of you questioning everything on the Macan EV Owners forum when you didn't own a Macan. You are now doing it on the Cayenne Owners Forum - constantly referring to your Taycan - have you actually ordered a Cayenne EV

The extract that you (as normal) questioned and said was wrong was from a reputable site. I was trying to be helpful by providing what I was told by a Porsche representative. But as ever, you believe you know better.

Really, how imature of you?

I'm not being negative just highlighting some basics (facts) and a much broader and deeper knowledge of the brand.

The Porsche website is the online entry point for the Porsche insurance quotation process if you care to check. To get a quote you need a reg number therefore not ideal if attempting to get a quote for a car that hasn't been registered.

The insurance group decision is as I described.

I do own a Macan.

I do own a 911.

I have previously owned 2 Taycans for 4 years and been a Porsche owner since 2003 - you?

I have been a forum member since 2020 - you?

Porsche sales folk are amongst the least knowledgeable as this and both the Taycan and Macan forums will bear testament to .

I wholeheartedly agree with you. One of the most insufferable members on this, the Taycan, and the Macan forums.

Thank you Throb. You and I know what the other forum members will experience and then probably come to your and my conclusion.

Thanks for the update on Admiral. My offer from Porsche insurance expires end of June. Guess I have to call again. Probably you know, Porsche insurance will handle the complementary 5 day drive away insurance for you. No need for you to do the extra paperwork with dealer.

Thanks. I'm going to try Admiral again in a few weeks. Will be interesting to see what Admiral want as currently we have the Macan the other car and house on a multi-policy.

Thanks for the tip but as I'm going to put a personal plate on it, hopefully it will be ok to insure beforehand.

I'll let you know if Admiral are prepared to insure it and whether they want a lot more than the Macan.

I noticed on the Porsche policy if you get the quote on the basis of valuing the car at say £100k that is what you get if it's a total write off or stolen. Not related to 'market value'.
