Would like to hear from others in this forum on the major price drop Tesla announced for Models S and X. S now starts at $75k and X at $80k. All paint colors are now standard. EV prices seem to be dropping across the board and competition is heating up. What do you all think about Porsche strategy as Taycan prices have gone on the other direction? Would buyers look for Taycan competition especially T now? We cannot ignore the massive super charging advantage they already have and now with these prices, T may become unbeatable. Thoughts?

Porsche doesn't design their cars to compete with entry-level cars. That's like asking if Ferrari will drop their prices when Lexus announces a price cut. Two different markets.

People who buy a Taycan aren't looking for the best EV, they're looking for a fun car that just happens to be a Porsche. Just my two cents.

I think it will sway some Porsche Taycan buyers to the Plaid version of the model S. These are electric cars and Porsche cannot sustain continpushy increasing prices on the Taycans.

Off at a slight tangent here......
But I'm very grateful to Tesla.

I am finding more and more negative / anti EV feeling out there (that's getting quite annoying).

Certainly got worse over the 2 years I have owned my Taycan and it's generally in line with the rising numbers of EVs on the road.
ICE car owners feel threatened and are turning more anti EV.

I think without Tesla (price / charging network / range / popularity etc) the pro EV argument would be a lot more difficult.

Tell me about it. The other day I’m coming back to my car from the store and some older lady is loading her car next to mine and says “oh, I was just admiring your car. It’s beautiful… just too bad it’s an electric”. And then goes into saying “do you know how destructive manufacturing these cars are for the environment” and “aren’t you afraid it’s going to blow up”. Full on anti EV rant. Never experienced that before.

Just had a look. Model S plaid is 110.000 euro. 20.000 decrease in price. Long range is 95.000 this is 40.000 euro less than my 4 CT. I really like my car but 40 K is a lot of money. When I made the decision two years ago for this price I would probably have bought the model S. Also has air suspension, faster acceleration, longer range, bigger trunk, super charger network. Still happy with my Taycan not moving over to the dark side

There is certainly a bit of a collapse on demand for EVs which is sad to see. In the UK I saw the first 0% finance offer from a manufacturer that I have seen in ages. From Cupra (sun brand of vw group) for their EV the Born. Which is a great car.

Just to ‘put the cat amongst the pigeons’, my personal view/experience from having a model X for 3 years…… it’s good to see Tesla prices dropping! I am off the opinion that they were/are over priced for what they are in terms of build quality, materials used and other tech that is missing that other manufacturers include for equivalent costing cars.

Agree that they are leading in operating tech, user interface etc. but the car around it is not worthy of such a high price tag. There are a growing amount of mechanical faults that are kept under the radar, especially with the model X from experience.

Tesla it seems, have been in a bubble caused by being high placed it the EV tech ladder and charging a premium for it. But competitors are now picking up momentum and the tech gap is reducing so the next best way of maintaining or improving sales is to reduce pricing.

In summary, I don’t think this is a case of choosing Porsche over Tesla or visa versa, which is better..blah blah, this will be a simply case of affordability or what people want to spend on a car….cheaper cars normal sell more than expensive cars……

I was chatting to a technician I know whilst waiting at our local fish and chip van. I mentioned driving to Germany and his first comment was “you’ll have to rent a car then” and when I explained that whilst the infrastructure in the UK has lacked investment, like everything else, in France Germany and Scandinavia it is reportedly excellent.
He then went into the standard rant about appalling conditions in lithium mines but hadn’t considered that the problem lies in the government regulations and all mining in those countries are done in unsafe conditions.

The oil industry has spent billions on lobbying and spreading such rumours and here in the UK it is a standard right wing diatribe.

Price has never been the main arbiter in my car choice, other than a top limit.
5 years ago, looking for a plug-in hybrid car, I chose a Toyota Prius since it had the best hybrid design and lowest weight. It was only 30% of my max budget.

The Tesla no longer make a Model S for the UK anyway.

Collapse in demand? EV sales continue to grow and set records every quarter. There’s been no collapse in demand. There’s become a bit of an oversupply due to so many new models appearing, which was predicted by many pundits years ago.

How awful! Sounds like just a rude woman, and I'm sorry you encountered that. I'm trying to think how I'd respond to such an exchange, but I'm not even sure right now. Call me naïve, but the last thing I ever thought about when buying my car was getting involved in some kind of controversy, for lack of a better term.

Maybe I'll need to have some snappy retort at-the-ready in case I encounter one of these people, but pretty unlikely where I live where most cars are Teslas and F-150's anyway. My joke with my family now is that every time I do something really environmentally unfriendly I exclaim, "Hey, I drive an EV!" Or, "Mommy can litter now because it's offset by my Porsche." So you can either say a few words to marginally educate those people, or go in a completely different direction to make sure they know to never approach you again :).

I say let 'em stew. I told very few people about my car while I was waiting to get it, but I did tell my Aunt because my Uncle is a life-long 911 owner and one of the people who inspired my love of Porsche. When I was checking in on them with an email after a Cat 4 hurricane made landfall in their city I mentioned I was finally getting my Porsche, and her response was, "Well, EV's sure didn't fare well in the flooding." Uhhh... ok? Maybe don't drop $6 mil in cash to live in the path of a hurricane? I ended up never even sending a picture after I got it. Whatever.

Agree with the comment that Porsche and Tesla are on two different levels. However Porsche is still overpriced. Too many options that should be standard . I don’t regret paying 168k for my sport turismo GTS but it is not worth twice the price of a model S long range if money is a consideration.
