Adaptive Cruise Control Issue

I have the same setup like @Wivenhoe so usually notice this straight away. In first scenario I usually take over for a short period and cruise control will continue afterwards. I am not saying it’s better than human driving, but like you I like to drive by night and it takes off some strain. Each to their own. Same for automated lane change.

On the Macan you could select Cruise Control or Adaptive Cruise Control by pressing the button on the end of the stalk and then selecting in the left tube. According to the online manual there should be 2 separate choices for plain cruise or adaptive. Apologies if the manual is wrong, I use adaptive and never used cruise control. I have a HUD and so I see the speed dropping, indicate and the car checks it’s safe and pulls out.

Maybe the manual is generic and covering for all options, i.e. cars equipped with adaptive cruise and cars equipped with regular cruise.

The manual is covering for cars that have or don't have Adaptive Cruise Control. If your car has Adaptive Cruise Control, then there is no way of operating it without the "adaptive" part. Unfortunately, the new Cayenne has Adaptive Cruise as standard, which means I will have to work around it. It's absolutely nuts that I have to "work around" a feature on the car when I'm spending £150,000. Just give me the choice!!

Will need to check if that’s still possible on my i5 before it comes, if it’s possible on it then it’s in one of the many menus because it’s not on the cruise control buttons.

It's definitely possible, as I used to own an i5. It's buried within the main menu settings in the iDrive.

How to Switch to Cruise Control Without Distance Control

• • Open the BMW iDrive screen menu.
  • Select Vehicle Apps (or Apps).
  • Go to Driving Settings.
  • Choose Driver Assistance, then select Driving.
  • Tap on Distance or Distance Control.
  • Select Switch to Cruise Control to disable adaptive distance.

You can select it as a shortcut, which is what I did. You do have to reselect it at the start of every journey, though.

That's another fault with adaptive cruise (on some cars, at least). A few years ago I had to drive from Southern Holland to Hamburg in a rental Nio ET7. A journey of many hundreds of km. It was winter, and there was a small bit of sleet for most of the journey. Within a few minutes of setting off and joining the motorway, a very small layer of sleet had developed at the top of the windscreen. Immediately, the adaptive cruise was no longer available due to the camera being obscured, even though the sleet wasn't that bad (the roads were completely clear). The problem was, I couldn't even use it as a "dumb" cruise control. So I had to drive for six hours without any cruise control, without any reason at all. Utter madness.

Looked at the manual, some scenarios @Throb and others mentioned are highlighted as problematic. So agree, there should be an option to turn it off if driver wishes too. Some cars allow you to turn off ESP completely which is plain dangerous on public roads. Even Maylaender leaves it on in safety car.

Apologies. I was wrong. I checked my car this morning and unlike what it says in the manual, there doesn't seem to be an option for cruise control only. I'm not sure what the assist selection does though.

ESP is a completely different thing and something that Porsche excels with. Guys turn off ESP to be able to drift and do burnouts. Sometimes you need the rear to break loose a bit.

During 2 day winter training (a long, long time ago) we got some insights into various settings, usually car manufactures do not allow to turn off ESP completely (except performance cars requiring training to enable all settings). My SL was drifting slightly in normal setting, ESP would kick in later by default. We played around with ESP on dedicated snow tracks. If you were to turn off ESP (only partially by default) announced (as passenger ) on S class (no 4 wheel drive) in corner (ice/snow), driver would loose car every time due to usual speed (from recollection you would need to reduce speed by 10-20 kmh for cornering without ESP). In S class with 4 wheel drive you could recover car at times (not sure why Porsche is offering SUV without 4 wheel drive). Not sure how ESP settings work in Porsche, guess I will find out during driver training.

Turning off ESP in icy/wet conditions would not be smart. I don’t turn it off on the track in a Porsche, but in my old Challenger it was not possible to run a fast lap with it on.

Less sophisticated ESP systems will require its removal to deliver a quick lap but a lot of the better brands have fine tuned theirs so well that you would really need to be a semi pro racer to lap quicker with it off than on.
