Town between Cayenne S EV and upcoming BMW iX5

Just signed on as I’m seriously thinking about getting a 2027 Cayenne S as my next daily driver.

I’m torn between the up-coming BMW IX5 and the Cayenne S.

The Porsche speaks to the driver in me, it has spirit and controls I can wrap my head around.

The Beemer speaks to the practical me. It’s got the range, the creature comforts and price point. The fully computerized dash is going to be a hurdle for me and a source of complaints from my very analog co-pilot/wife.

What are your thoughts? Were probably all Porsche people here, so I’m guessing I can already read the Tea leaves.

Our current cars are a BMW XM and an X5 50e. The XM is mine and is being replaced with a Cayenne S coupe.
My wife loves her X5 and it was always going to be another X5 for her after this one but whilst we haven’t seen one in the flesh, the photos and videos of the new one are a disappointment. I’m not keen on BMW’s new interiors and the design quirks of the new X5 such as the lights and door handles are odd.

UK tax changes in April 2028 mean that hybrids are effectively finished for company car drivers and electric is the only way to go. The BMW electric offerings don’t float my boat at all so after 15 years of BMWs, I’m jumping ship!

The fully computerized dash is going to be a hurdle for me and a source of complaints from my very analog co-pilot/wife.

A Tesla-style iPad is a dealbreaker for me, where every function is on the screen.
Always keeping eyes on the road is essential in driving.
When you get penalised for holding or touching a phone, tablet, or any such device for any reason while behind the wheel, I wonder why just an iPad on wheels is allowed.

I currently drive the BMW X5 50e and truly love the car. I looked at the IX3 and the IX5 but the new body style and interior just didn't appeal to me. The BMW is the logical choice with its range and tech but I decided to go for the Cayenne EV S. Take delivery the end of September or early October. It will be my first Porsche after driving BMW's for years.

I'm leaning against the BMW due to the following facts:

• there is no dashboard or display behind the steering wheel - the panoramic display at the bottom of the windshield doesn't do it for me
• my wife and I do not like a screen that pops-up above the dash
• the steering wheel looks hideous
• overall I prefer the interior design of the Porsche

I'm reserving final judgement however until I see pricing on a performance version and get to an actually drive one…the price is certain to be more favorable vs. the Porsche and the iX5 is very very very good spec's wise…

however at this time based on what I know and the interior design of the BMW I'm leaning Porsche…I will consider the Range Rover EV also before making a final purchase.

While I’m leaning towards the Porsche, I plan to wait until I see an IX3 to determine if the IX5 is worth waiting around to see in the flesh or at least via the internet when driving impressions are available.

The Range Rover is a non starter due to Range Rover having a perceived issue with their electronics.

I had a Range Rover Velar from new (a plug-in) and in my case and many others, the issue with electronics / software was more than a perception ! The car was great when it had no issues but really bad when it did. I had it for 2 years and it was in the dealers 8 times. Whenever I drove it I was never sure if it was going to be a trouble free drive.

Excellent dealer but they were swamped by warranty work. To make matters worse, most reputable insurers (in the UK) would not cover Range Rovers due to the lack of protection against CanBus theft - I think they have done something about that now.

I certainly wouldn’t risk buying a newly launched model at $ 160,000

The iX5 is still a contender for me (in 1-2 years used), but seeing the iX3 almost killed it for me. It's a love it or hate it thing I guess, I really did not like the interior. The iX5 will obviously be more luxurious, but the design won't change. The tech is great, BMW did great there, but the overal design and fit&finish is just crap IMO. I assume the difference in quality between an iX3 and iX5 won't be huge.

If you're in the US, the BMW will be the really logical choice since the Porsche will have a tariff price hike.

Talking about Range Rovers' lack of protection against CanBus theft, someone I know had his top-of-the-line fully specked Defender OCTA, got stolen only last month, parked on the street in Mafair, London. Never recovered!

There are YouTube videos showing how the thieves can steal the car in less than a minute. All they were doing was to prize off the inner mudguard, reach up, cut the CanBus cable connect a box of tricks available on the internet and that gave them total control of the vehicle. Lexus had the same issue so retro-fitted plates to protect the CanBus cable - probable cost less than £100.

They are now accessing the CanBus cable by removing headlights

I'm currently in a BMW iX M60, and was expecting my next car to be an iX5 at the end of my PCP deal next March (that would have been my 5th BMW, after a 520d, 430d and M5). While some of the iX5 specs look good, and the cabin works for me (except the steering wheel), the lack of any form of all-electric M version of the iX5 meant I shopped around, and now have a turbo on order. If the turbo didn't exist, I would have happily ordered a Cayenne S instead.

Seems like BMW is losing quite a few long-time customers to the Cayenne electric!

Frightening to watch a vehicle get stolen so easily. I’m slightly familiar with the canbus system as I had a 09 BMW GS 1200. I never thought about how to circumvent the system to a nefarious advantage. Guess I’m out of touch. Sucks getting old.
