Let’s imagine the new Macan EV comes out in 2 versions:
  • 3.8s 0 to 60, 100 kWh battery for 650 km (400 miles) range, 56200 USD
  • 7.3s 0 to 60, 140 kWh battery for 1030 km (635 miles) range, 59500 USD
Which one would you buy?

Background: It has been 7 weeks since my Taycan 4S+ went into the shop and it will take a few more months to get it fixed. The loaner is an older Audi A4, and the MS90D junk is literally falling apart as we speak. Today the driver door handle broke and just a minute later my son pulled out the little automatic window handle on the back door. So I am kind of forced to look for a new car. I don't want to spend another 200k USD for a Taycan with a smallish "unreliable" and obviously very hard to fix battery.

So I went on the hunt and came across this Chinese made car. The interior with so much leather feels more luxuries than my Taycan. It has full self driving features for an extra 4650 USD. It is spacious, so pretty perfect fit for the time we spend here in the coming years. I will test drive it, and if it's good, it could be an amazing long distance driving machine.

Which version would you buy? What is more enticing to you considering that there are basically no EVs on the market with such a range...

If I can still keep the TTS, then the slow long range one is the one for me.

For an imaginary 60k, I would buy both to be honest.

The long range for wife, the fast one for myself. Would use the fast one for day to day driving and the long range for trips across Europe.

Intersting idea, but no way Porsche can stuff a 140kWh battery into a Macan with the current technology available today. Hell, my F-150 Lightning has a 131kWh better and the truck is twice as big as a Macan.

If Porsche can figure out how to put a 120kWh battery in the future Cayenne EV, then that would be the car for me. I love my CT4S, but I would love to have a 100kWh battery in it just to get an extra 20 or 30 miles worth of range.

Future cannot get here fast enough!

Fast charging and available chargers are more important than a really long range.

With 1000 km real range, highway 130 km/h 10 degrees Celsius outside. I would be able to cover most of my trips. That would be nice. I would need a stop anyway and could recharge.

But 1000 km range will probably around 700 km real highway.

And charging a battery of this size will take a long time. Unless it can be combined with lunch or dinner I would rather have two / three 20 minutes stops than one 45 minute stop.

For my use 300 real highway Km during winter is not that bad. Probably 400 would be better.

currently high speed chargers are being installed everywhere I drive. Ionity and Fastned are installing 18 charger fascilities at important stops. That is more important than a long range. It is not the stop itself but more the stress of potential waiting time for busy chargers or not finding a charger.

so for me 0-100 in 4 sec would be nice. Fast charging like de have now. And 400 km real world highway range should be enough

Haven't thought about that! The problem in this case is, that the actual car I test drive tomorrow is not that great looking on the outside, so one for now might be enough!

I lean towards the long range version, because this would be the high tech version of the future. I am just worried, it would be just a bit too slow for my day to day driving. Also getting back into any other EV with small battery would be an annoyance...

If the Volvo/Polestar factory in Wuhan can do it in a slightly raised coupe/hatchback, than Porsche could do it in an even bigger SUV. They just don't have the supplier needed. They also might not be interested in deepening their dependency on China.

Future cannot get here fast enough!
It's here! It's a lifestyle car for "younger" people. I can order it today and have it in 2 weeks.

Well, we're just "imagining" right? Because I don't like suvs and leave station wagons for the wife (she likes both).

Regarding range, as long as you have plenty fast chargers en route and your car can actually use them (200kw+) then 300km range is all you need.

I'm not siting in a bloody car for 3h+ non stop.

Last time I did a 7h trip non stop (Madrid - Algarve) I swore I'd rather take a bus next time because at least those stop from time to time.

No. "The Qilin batteries are based on CATL’s third-generation CTP technology. With a record-breaking volume utilization efficiency of 72% and an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg, it achieves the highest system integration level worldwide so far, capable of delivering a range of over 1,000 km. It can replenish the battery from 10% SOC to 80% SOC in just 30 minutes."

The first customer worldwide getting this battery is this car.

Than the 100kWh battery version would be enough.

That is why I went for a test drive to check out the self driving features. They are really good!
Sitting in the car for a few hours and letting it drive long distance on the highway is not an issue.

If you then not even have to charge on a 6 hours highway drive, than a stinky bus ride might suddenly become a little less enticing? :)

It's not the driving per se. I don't mind driving for 7h.

I hate sitting down for 7h unless I'm naked or in boxers and I'm pretty sure traffic police would have a field day if I were caught like that.

After 3h driving, I start taking my shoes off. 5h and shirt goes off. At 7h, all bets are off.

That's why we like the German Autobahn. Fully engaging driving experience, no shirt comes off, only the hair.

Interesting! I would for the slow / long range model presumably it will have a real range of 750-800KM in the summer, and 600KM in the winter. But I'd probably observe how the Macan is going to shake up once delivered in 2025 despite the matured tech/ev platform, hopefully software too.
I also found NIO ET7 quite interesting with 150kwh battery, and you can simply swap the battery at the station in less than 5 mins, I was invited for a test drive of the EL7 the SUV model and found it quite nice to drive and seat-in, tried the bat. swap station and was a very smooth process.

Looks nice, but i’m sorry for your brokwn Taycan.
I voted for faster version, since it’s hard to believe that you would be happy with 8seconds to 60…

That makes me even more curious, how a 7.3s EV drives. :) The 6.9s EQE (Made in China) I test drove recently, was not bad either. I did test drive the 3.8s and it's brute force, something I had for years and never really use, anyway.

I want to buy the big battery thing, because that really is a game changer. I want to experience it, so I know what I am talking about. Also, the company gives lifetime warranty on the battery, so unless the company goes bust...

The car is big, with lots of space for passengers and cargo. So a large battery makes it even more useful in the long run, easy to hand it off to the company later on for all kind of purposes.
