HV Battery Recalibrating

I’ve just noticed that it is recommended that the Cayenne’s HV battery should be recalibrated every 4,000 miles. Perhaps they have introduced this as a result of the different battery in the Cayenne. The Macan manual makes no mention, but the forum is full of the need to do it to rectify issues.

It does seem to be straightforward, but every 4K seems excessive and I have never taken my Macan down to anything near 4% !. It’ll be interesting to see if dealers make us aware of this on handover as it would be easily missed in the manual.

Porsche recommends recalibrating the high-voltage battery every 4,000 mi (6,500 km).

Calibrating the high-voltage battery

• Temperature at the storage location above +10°C

1. Park the vehicle with a state of charge less than or equal to 4%.
2. Lock the vehicle and leave it locked and stationary for at least 1 hour.
3. Charge the high-voltage battery to 100% with direct current or alternating current.
4. Lock the vehicle and leave it locked and stationary for at least 1 hour.

The calibration is complete after the rest period. The display of the distance travelled since the last update is reset.

I like how specific this process is here - no guessing! The Taycan instructions talk about 6 1/2 hour waiting periods, but a simple 1 hour wait is much easier to manage. Rooting for a Macan update (maybe just to the documentation?) to match

I do wonder if it’s the different battery technology on the Cayenne to the Macan. I have no idea if battery recalibration is different to the Macan‘s rebalancing ?

As Porsche are now producing the batteries, they now have people who understand battery technology rather than relying on a supplier. It may help to reduce the degradation and keep the battery to within the warranty %’ages ?

Porsche does not make the battery cells. Rather they make all of the other bits for the pack and do the assembly. Cells represent about 50% of the pack cost.

Macan uses CATL prismatic cells and Cayenne uses LG pouch cells. Different chemistries too.

As I no longer have a Macan EV and never had the luxury to experience the software update I am not sure if Battery capacity is currently available on Macan. Seems similar to functionality on iPhone or Mac to test health status of battery. That's utterly helpful. To be fair, they recommend to recalibrate every 4k miles (probably for route planning as user-specific charging behaviour can influence the accuracy) but only indicate to do so if capacity not shown. Totally agree, 4% is really, really low and if calculations are off (that's why you are doing it after all), well, good luck .

Battery capacity in winter will be 20-30% less (for those who want to run the test in winter) and thus range will be affected on short distance daily commutes. On long distance drive, battery temperature while charging and driving will have an effect on total range and charging speed. Best left to Porsche route planning unless someone creates co-pilot app for passenger display.

They don't want you to do it in winter as total capacity would be reduced by 20-30% - I assume battery would show around 70 kW.
