Do you remember how to drive an ICE vehicle?

^ And here I thought it was just my maps that were being constantly updated!

What about calendar notifications? Seems to be some random element deciding which calendar appointments prompt reminders, and at what times.

Yea, hard to miss with Porsche.

Honestly, I haven’t figured out if they’re the best ever with all of the updates or if they were just that bad to start with. Like, “ they’re the most improved map”. Not necessarily a compliment.

But really, I just wish there was a reply feature so I could be like, “You guys know I’m using Waze, right?”

I never set that up. Funny how you think there is something actually deciding on which reminders to show, rather than just random probability of the code working or not, i.e. reminder shows up when the software works, it doesn't when the software fails.

Most internet connected nav systems load tiles as you drive. Typically only the engineer debugging the map code wants to see that the next set of tiles loaded successfully. Customers don't care, since it is not actionable, nor does it have any value. It does however distract the driver.

“HELP! The car died and it’s sticking halfway out into the street! And it won’t start! And nothing works! What’s wrong with your car?!”

That’s the phone call I received from my wife yesterday.

But it wasn’t the Taycan in distress.
It was the Macan.

Yesterday was time to take the Taycan in for service, get new tires, and to catch up on recalls. And while it’s gone, for the first time in several years, my wife has to drive an ICE vehicle. Our Macan. And she apparently forgot how it worked.

From what I gather, she had turned the ignition on, put it in gear, rolled backwards out of our sloped driveway halfway into the street, and panicked when the steering felt stiff and the pedals didn’t work.

“Calm down. What gear are you in?”

“Reverse”

“Put it in park”

“Ok”

“Step on the brake”

“I already tried that! It doesn’t work!”

“Just listen to me. Step on the brake”.

“Ok”

“Now turn the ignition until you hear the engine start.”

“Ok. Ok, I think it’s working now.”

Please keep my wife in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time of having to remember how to drive an ICE vehicle. And especially for when it’s time to get more gas.
But remember.....women are really, really good at multi tasking......and men are useless.

That's what we are repeatedly told........and lots of jokes and humour made of it.

Unfortunately, all the women I've had relationships with seem to have missed the memo, as I do all the important stuff.
Meanwhile their "multi tasking superiority" only fires up when refurbishing trips (nails/waxing/hair appointments) need to merge with shopping, the gym and meeting her sister.
Then it's like a military operation.

Ask if she remembered to book her car in for an overdue service, and it's like I'd asked her to learn how to pilot the Space Shuttle.

I recently had to deal with a clutch pedal for the first time in nearly 10 years- a trackday hire, was anxious beforehand about competence at rev-matching on downshifts, thankfully unfounded as I found myself not having to think about it once I got going....HOWEVER that was after the major embarrassment of holding up the queue for sighting laps when I couldn't get the car back in gear- after much thrashing about trying every combination of pedals, gearlever, parking brake and ignition, I had to run back to the pit garage to be told by the hire guy "oh yeah, sometimes the pedal doesn't return properly after being down a while- just hook it back up with your foot". Well thanks for the warning.

I can’t imagine the anxiety of holding people up and not being able to get into gear. Sucks there was known issue they didn’t share.

I was a little worried picking up my 911 last year. First time driving a manual in around 5 years. I was sure I’d kill it driving off the lot. But it was fine. Like riding a bike.

FYI, my wife also doesn’t know how to ride a bike, so she doesn’t get that expression.

I tried to teach her how to drive a manual when we were first dating.

“Why does it keep rolling backwards?! Make it stop!”

She never learned.

But she hates driving in general. She wants cars to drive themselves.
I stupidly tried to teach my wife to drive a stick on a BMW Isetta (look it up; very small, very cute!). As hard as that learning process is normally, that car has a LEFT hand shift ..so I was up against a double whammy. Needless to say, she stalled it in a very dangerous locale and never never took up manual shifting (ever!).

The Urkle car!

I was for real just looking those up on CarGurus yesterday. I was thinking about how cool (maybe not the right word) it would be to show up to a track day with one.

@Jhenson29 I aspire to be just like your wife on so many levels. I pick up my taycan jan.9. I'm a Jersey girl and I never want to pump gas again. (When I was growing up, we weren't allowed to pump it. Not sure if that's still true )

I suspect after a year or so of driving I'll get into a rental and wonder why it doesn't work the way I'm used to!

Thank you for that laugh!

@MoniqueDenver it’s been a really great car for us the last 3.5 years. My wife for sure won’t go back to ICE as her daily driver. And she’s too particular to drive anything else at this point. We plan on keeping it another 3.5 years or so and replacing with another one. Enjoy the car!

I really miss that car!...I've been toying with an (unlikely) electric version: the Microlini ()

Holy hell, do I feel you on this one. I take a fair number of calls on my commute and I was looking forward to the reminders. The calendar notifications are befuddling. The only consistent thing is that they are always after the actually meeting has occurred. Sometimes a solid 12 hours later. Sometimes the next morning. I mostly love my Taycan, but on the short list of truly useless is this feature.

The extreme variability in outcomes (i.e., no reminder, relevant reminder, totally flawed reminder) is is an impressive accomplishment regardless of the underlying reason!
