J-1772 internals need re-working by consumer/customer for the Porsche EVSE not to suck - not a quality product.

the trend continues unabated that the porsche EVSE and related parts are simply awful products and have no business charging your EV - purchase an alternative quality EVSE and ignore the Porsche EVSE offerings.

Only by a consumer/customer who is fed up with Porsche recalls but still insists on using the Porsche EVSE. ;)

Trouble updating your PMCC?
Thread with tips and details: Can't update Mobile Porsche Charger Connect beyond version 2925
(Posts from 2023 through June, 2025)
added to post #1 - thanks!

quite the history for a glorified on/off switch…

this thread the ongoing discoveries about the internal problems with the OBC and it's lack of power-robustness seem to indicate that Porsche farming out EE design decisions to supply chain partners has had some negative impacts…
  • EVSE - not designed by Porsche
  • OBC - not designed by Porsche
  • Heater - not designed by Porsche
  • other recall items "not designed" by Porsche
the parts of the Taycan designed "in house" by Porsche by and large have been excellent, but al lthe problems with the Taycan seem to me to correlate highly with supply chain design process - which is a historical ICE process where you move mature and largely "solved" problems out to to the lowest bidder…

hmmmm…EV's are not mature and the "let the supply chain do this" approach hasn't paid dividends - it has in fact cost more - because all sorts of other digital wins are "blocked" - OTA updates are technically infeasible and lead to high maintenance and warranty costs to have dealer-service perform tasks that could be scaled/automated to be done digitally…

wonder if VW/Audi/Porsche are learning any lessons?

I bought a Wallbox 40 amp plug-in EVSE four years ago. It's been three years since it was connected to internet and updated. I don't use any of its online functionality. The switch seems to work ok to charge my Taycan.
I'd rather not FA,FO.
I hope things will continue to be ok.

until Porsche came out with their EVSE I was unaware of any EVSE's that had problems, my experience was always they were a "solved" problem and not particularly challenging - they ere wall paper - not something you think about or notice…i

Porsche has managed to bring shame/regret/incompetence to something that no one should've even noticed or thought about.

who knew plugging your EV into the wall could be made so bad…

good thing EV's generally conform to a published EV charging standard like J-1777 or alternatives and therefore do not REQUIRE a vendor specific EV charger - if I was "stuck" with the Porsche EVSE because my car REQUIRED it - it would suck badly!!! very very badly.

This is an interesting point about EV technology and reliance on external supply chain.
Electronic products like computers and TVs seem to rely on external supply chains for parts, assembly, and ?design?.
The complexity of EVs makes them different?

I think the different with car is design and production is given to supply chain - where as with most electronics only production is "farmed" out - design/validation/conformance normally remains "in house"…

the difference is where are the details sweated?

with electronics the details are sweated by the vendor
with automobiles the details are sweated by the supply-chain vendor - they deliver a "widget"

the OBC was spec'd by Porsche 22 kW - the details were handled by they Italian supply chain partner…

at least I believe that's where the difference lies…
