To date Prosche has shipped a "flawed" EVSE in North America - there have been several "similar" EVSE's shipped since the original 918 Spyder and Panamera/Cayenne eHybrid -these have been known by various names:
  • Porsche Mobile Charger
  • Porsche Model Charger +
  • Porsche Mobile Connect Charger
  • Porsche Universal Charger
they have all be the same large and heavy pill shape and ranges in capacity from 3.6 kW to 9.6 KW and had various levels of modular cords (power supply and vehicle charging cable)

I'm not a big fan of any of these variation and they have demonstrated problems leading to recalls and actual charging problems, vehicle compatibility with non-Porsche EV's and a wide range of less than stellar feature set or problems…

until today I had just assumed the Cayenne EV would get the same EVSE as the Macan EV in North America (the Porsche Universe Charger…

so tonight I went to my local Porsche dealer and got to see/touch/feel/poke/prod a base Cayenne EV and Cayenne Turbo EV (I'm impressed and it seems an excellent EV version of a Cayenne)

but low and behold they had the "included" North American EVSE in the trunk of each Cayenne

and it's not PILL SHAPED - it's completely new EVSE that looks nothing like all previous EVSE's from Porsche
  • it's smaller
  • it's lighter
  • it has a new connector for the module power supply cable
  • it's J-1772 (not NACS)
  • and the manual lists as a Level 1 and Level 2 charger
  • the bag included a NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 14-50 power supply cable
I have _NO_ data about how this unit behaves or works or operates - but it's not he same EVSE we've gotten from Porsche for the past 7+ years…

I'll be excited to try one out or hear first hand experiences from early owners of a Cayenne EV

in the mean time we can all be curious and satisfied with the pics that I took!!!

well that's progress! Having dealt with the Porsche pill in 2019 and a huge glass front / overpriced "box" that mounted on the wall.

But these things don't do much really. They

1. pass 240 VAC to the car, and preferably high current (48A - maybe higher?)

2. negotiate with the car re current, and won't pass more than the circuit they are on can handle

3. *big differentiator* imho- turn on when electrical rates are cheaper, report status over a network connection, and can be controlled from devices on the net (like mobile phones)

I've used Porsche's (2019), Audi's (2020- same thing), ChargePoint home flex, Autel (glad that's gone), and now a 2nd ChargePoint. We have 2 ChargePoints now each on a 60A circuit (48A max charging- Macan's can't handle more than 40A anyway).

The power plug and the receptacle are some of the biggest points of failure. For myself, I will only use one that could be hard-wired (like ChargePoint). Both of ours are.

And, I got a heat-sensing fire detector in the garage and tied it to the communicating smoke detectors in the house. FWIW.

I was there too last night, at the Cayenne EV event -the car looks and feels great the only very disappointing issue was to see the NACS is DC ONLY.
In Taycan they said they don't have space to retrofit the switch module between AC and DC but in Cayenne EV the thing was designed day 1 knowing NACS port will be used... i also don't get why the J1772 side is not full CCS....

Hopefully the thing will be retrofitted to full NACS port because it's going to be very confusing to people how to charge this car and MY27 Taycans
