Senate Republicans Propose $1000 Tax on Electric Vehicles to Fund Road Repair

But it's not just closing the flow of tax credits on these senators' minds. Going forward, EV owners would be charged a one-time $1000 fee at purchase under the proposed rules.

Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) explained that this fee would recoup around 10 years' worth of federal gas tax revenue per car. Federal gas taxes, which were first imposed under the Hoover administration in 1932, are almost exclusively used to maintain and repair roads. The same is true for many states around the country — which poses a future funding problem for transportation agencies as EV adoption increases and gas tax revenue decreases.

"EVs can weigh up to three times as much as gas-powered cars, creating more wear and tear on our roads and bridges," Fischer said.

Damn Nebraskans. As you are aware, we already pay a "road tax" annually with our registration in Ohio. Even my wife Defender which is a "mild hybrid" receives this "road tax"

Typical politicians.... Add a tax but don't remove the tax break.

Overcomplicate to make them needed.

And as if the US cares about car weights with trucks being the biggest seller.

Which US EV weighs 3x more than a US ICE car.

Trump and his minions are f*cking idiots.

In California the majority of road wear & tear is from 18 wheelers on our highways. These vehicles destroy the roads especially in the summer’s high heat. These vehicles destroy bridges as well & rather than ICE or EV vehicles.
Charging $1000 per new EV disregard all the used EVs on the road as well. This tax is clearly being offered up to lower demand for EVs but it will backfire from the start as fuel prices steadily are rising under Trump just like food prices. This administration & their republican supporters are not very bright. They promised lower gas & food prices but just the threat of all the dumbass tariffs is causing prices to rise. I was just at a grocery store in Utah a few days ago with a dozen eggs at $9 and 18 eggs for $13. What a bargain but then again I’m just laughing at all the poor boneheads that believed all the promises Trump made. But at least now we have the Gulf of America, the acquisition of Greenland, Canada to become the 51st state, taking back the Panama Canal and shutting down the Department of Education. So many smart moves being made that a $1000 EV tax barely registers…

Yep. Those damned republicans infected millions of chickens with bird flu before the election and then didn’t rescind the culling orders from the CDC. Right on point.

Yesterday I bought 18 eggs for $7.99. That's $5.33/dozen. Not sure where you are getting your egg price stories and what eggs have to do with proposed EV tax, but you do you.

I'm not sure that people are really clear on the level of the current attack on EV's in the US. Including sabotage of charging stations, every program that provided any sort of incentive to EV's being cancelled or suspended, Tesla's self immolation with it's wannabe brown shirt leader.

Could be wrong but Europe is going full forward on electric because it needs to dump imported fossil fuel from a broad array of bad guys and it it quite capable of generating all the electricity it needs, if the eff'ing Germans would wake up.

They shouldn’t make promises they can’t keep. There have been bird flu before and high gas prices but right now they can’t blame Biden for $5 gas in California or $9 eggs. Inflation is up 3% in just the last month. It doesn’t matter to me because I make money either way so Trump can let the tariffs rip. I get rich either way. Too bad for the people on a tight budget…

I had no idea sabotage of charging stations such as cutting and stealing cables for salvage value was a US-only problem. Thanks for the info

Yesterday paid $5.00 CDN for a dozen eggs in Canada. That's for the fancier eggs from chickens that get treated nice. That's $3.50 US and we have bird flu too.

They certainly have cornered the market on breaking promises. Maybe ask your governor about the price of gasoline? It's $3.29 in AZ and somehow our roads are better despite the fact that most SoCal trucks traverse them to make their deliveries out of state.

Per ChatGPT:

"As of January 2024, California imposes the highest state gasoline tax in the United States, at 68.1 cents per gallon. (TAXFOUNDATION.ORG)
This rate surpasses those of other states, with Illinois at 66.5 cents per gallon and Pennsylvania at 58.7 cents per gallon. (KIPLINGER.COM)
In addition to the state excise tax, California drivers also pay a federal excise tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, along with other state-specific fees and taxes. These include charges for environmental programs and infrastructure maintenance, which collectively contribute to higher gasoline prices in the state."

Exactly. The suppliers take every opportunity to price gouge and they have a tired list of excuses why prices are up so high. It’s quite comical. I’m in the semiconductor industry which competes on a global level based on real value. When I build/sell an advanced semiconductor production system to mega factories around the world for $50M to $150M US each I get 5% off the top and they buy 50-100 systems for each fab. The demand for these systems will be unabated for the foreseeable future since nano fabrication production equipment is used to make chips which are in everything (except eggs).
The demand for chips in ICE or EV vehicles is the same on top of consumer electronics so I get paid big dollars either way.
The businesses that take advantage of consumers in the US will always be there since there are plenty of greedy people in commodities. Luckily in my industry if you’re product is just a fraction of a cent higher than your competitors you get swallowed up or you go out of business. Margins can be thin but volumes are extraordinary. Chip makers print money…
