“HELP! The car died and it’s sticking halfway out into the street! And it won’t start! And nothing works! What’s wrong with your car?!”

That’s the phone call I received from my wife yesterday.

But it wasn’t the Taycan in distress.
It was the Macan.

Yesterday was time to take the Taycan in for service, get new tires, and to catch up on recalls. And while it’s gone, for the first time in several years, my wife has to drive an ICE vehicle. Our Macan. And she apparently forgot how it worked.

From what I gather, she had turned the ignition on, put it in gear, rolled backwards out of our sloped driveway halfway into the street, and panicked when the steering felt stiff and the pedals didn’t work.

“Calm down. What gear are you in?”

“Reverse”

“Put it in park”

“Ok”

“Step on the brake”

“I already tried that! It doesn’t work!”

“Just listen to me. Step on the brake”.

“Ok”

“Now turn the ignition until you hear the engine start.”

“Ok. Ok, I think it’s working now.”

Please keep my wife in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time of having to remember how to drive an ICE vehicle. And especially for when it’s time to get more gas.

there is so much familiar about this - I simply can't…OMG soooo much that is familiar

we now consider it "essential" to get "painted keys" because we are fortunate enough to own multiple Porsche's - it avoids the awkward situation of sitting in the vehicle with a key fob and yet the vehicle won't start - even after changing the battery…

what we learned is it helps if you grab the actual FOB that matches the car you're trying to start - and if they all looks the same - well that's difficult - painted key to the rescue…

there may have been 1 or 2 times when a certain member of my family was int he garage 100% frustrated at not being able to start the car they wanted to drive because of grabbing the wrong fob…painted keys to match the car are now a "must have"…

I have either painted covers or keychains for all of the cars for that reason. But that wasn’t the issue here.

She had the key. She literally just forgot to start the car.

Here in Europe most ICE cars have manual gearboxes. Imagine your Macan being a manual one… ?

Last 15 years I’ve owned cars with automatic gearboxes, when I do drive a manual one (wife’s or a rental), I’m surprised by my muscle memory

I tried to teach her how to drive a manual when we were first dating.

“Why does it keep rolling backwards?! Make it stop!”

She never learned.

But she hates driving in general. She wants cars to drive themselves.

Haha, my mom had similar issues with a rental car. But that's because her daily doesn't have a ignition button.

I think we all know of a certain EV-only car company that appeals to people like that.

Edit: I just checked and it’s planned for 2026, so…..should be actually out by 2040.

So you're saying that Porsche will have TSCN V3 access in around the year 2039?

?‍♂ I actually don’t keep up with it; I’ll assume it’s announced for 2025 then? It’s largely irrelevant to me. I sill prefer ICE for long distance trips. Plus, keeps me sharp so I remember how to start it.

BMW send out a letter recently narrowing down the anticipated window for TSCN V3 access to a 365-day period within calendar year 2025.
Porsche is after BMW in line, so 2039 seems about right.

The whole separate, private networks thing is absolutely insane to me. Always has been.
