Porsche is apparently considering relocating Taycan production from Zuffenhausen to Leipzig. Other electric models are also likely to be delayed or adapted. These are still only considerations - but they have a serious background.
. . .
911 instead of Taycan production?
Production of the Taycan was integrated into the existing Zuffenhausen plant at enormous expense as a ‘lighthouse project for electric mobility’ – primarily at the request of the then Chairman of the Works Council, Uwe Hück. Part of Taycan production is also an extremely long bridge over which the car bodies are transported across the entire factory site and a road. The employees even gave up part of their salary to finance the new facilities. But now the demand is no longer there, the contracts of temporary workers are not being extended – there is talk of up to 1,000 contracts expiring.

Lutz Meschke, CFO and Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, is said to favour an approach in which the Taycan factory will manufacture individualised vehicles. Porsche can currently only build around 500 highly customised vehicles, for which customers pay a lot of money – especially for the iconic 911.

Will the Porsche Taycan be made in Leipzig in the future?

If the build quality of my previous (Leipzig built) Panamera is anything to go by I'd welcome the move.

Anyone know if the new Macan EV is also built in Leipzig? I know the previous ICE model was.

yes - that was the briefing in Aug. 2023 when I took the Leipzig factory tour due euro-delivery while I was there - they are quite proud of the fact that Leipzig can build: Macan ICE, Macan EV, Panamera

if you get the opportunity for a factory tour I highly recommend it! I love factory tours.

Our tour guide was quite knowledgable (15+ years working there) - and had strong opinions about the choices made with some of the builds we saw rolling down the assembly line…each car is "bespoke" - from Porsche's perspective every car is "custom" - because it's a specific order with specific options - dictated by the customer - in some cases it's an actual retail customer, in other cases it's a dealer spec'ing the car for their inventory and eventual sale - but every car is "bespoke" in terms of a unique set of choices made for the build.

the factory is hard core "just in time" with many/most/all of the parts arriving just 3 or fewer hours before they are installed on a given vehicle/order…my daughter and I could stand and watch the robot ballet of the windshield install station for hours - apply the glue to the windshield, and then place the windshield on the vehicle's body - the smooth and choreographed rotation of the window to apply the glue-bead is simply mesmerizing - no pictures or video's please this is the heart of the kingdom and we don't want our processes escaping onto youtube!!!
