Thank you. It’s a while away from being released here, but I’d like a decent truck to tow with. It sounds pretty decent. Hopefully they can sort the driveline lashI got it with the $75k price point, and it's an incredible value.
Highs:
Lows:
- Gorgeous interior materials, open pore wood, super solid, everything feels incredibly well built
- Brutally fast, especially with the "hidden launch control", no annoying beep, fake rev-limiter. Just silently foot on brake in sport mode, foot on throttle, and away you go feeling like a horse is sitting on your chest.
- Wonderful highway cruiser. Very comfortable in soft suspension mode, great efficiency and range despite being a high sitting truck.
- I personally love the exterior design, the details on the surfacing and stuff is excellent.
- Steering feel is fantastic, way way way better than the Tesla M3P I had. On par with Taycan.
- The suspension range is amazing, low mode for that slammed truck look, and off-road lift mode for that lifted truck feel is hilarious.
Overall coming from Tesla it's a huge improvement, and I think they have a serious potential with the company. I immediately put in a reservation for an R1S for the wife after owning this for a week. I haven't felt the same about trying to reserve a Macan EV after having the Taycan for a few weeks.
- Minor software annoyances. The ability to walk up to the car and get in isn't as good as comfort access, and nowhere near as good as Teslas phone key.
- Can feel the driveline lash, minor clicking when leaving stop signs and stuff. Not quite like "send it back" bad, but minorly annoying, but I imagine will get fixed in future iteraitons.
- Stiff suspension setting is hilariously bad, can't even really use it on normal streets as it just bounces you around. Can imagine it helps on a racetrack, but.... you are literally NEVER taking this to a track.
- The gearguard camera needs tweaking. It picks up and records all 5 angles anytime a car goes past or someone walks past it. Meaning if you leave it in a busy parking lot for half a day, and come back, you have 375 videos to review.
Driving dynamics, and sporty feel of course doesn't come close to the Taycan, but it's literally a pickup truck. I've always loved fast wagons so my choice has always been the Taycan wagon which is why I scooped it up when I had a chance.

While on the one hand that’s impressive, on the other, ex-F1 engineers fettling the chassis and running gear on a truck sounds a bit OTT.Great write up
I know an engineer at Rivian. He explained the suspension was modeled after McLaren (also Rivian hired a ton of McLaren engineers)
any brief thoughts?
That’s definitely true. The Rivian charges faster than the M3P but nowhere near as fast as the Taycan. On my first road trip back with the Taycan it shocked me how quick it charged up.From my experience on the road, the charging curve of the Taycan is considerably faster than the Rivian. I’ve had several chats with Rivian owners envious of the Porsche’s charging speed as I am in/out so quickly.
They are unlikely to be ex-F1, probably from the road car division of McLaren which is completely separate and, I believe, no longer sharing the same owner.on the other, ex-F1 engineers fettling the chassis and running gear on a truck sounds a bit OTT
I think we’d be very lucky to see a RHD in 2024. They were supposed to begin LHD sales in Europe this year, then it got pushed back to 2023. Not sure that’s a certainty either.I'm hoping they come to the UK fairly soon. The R1S looks great and would be amazing for family haulage.
