Mercedes SL 63 AMG

Was at luxury hotel and they offered a nice lineup of Mercedes cars to drive - I didn’t notice the EQ until it was time to leave but did happen to take a burn in the SL 63 AMG. Although I’d never buy one It’s a nice car, great engine growl with cracks and snaps. I must say , It’s easy to take for granted just how good Porsche really is - almost nothing beats Porsche driving dynamics and visibility. I found the Mercedes luxurious inside, although a bit tacky with all the neon (even the vents). I couldn’t get comfortable and found the hood to be in your face - Porsche, there is no substitute

IME the days of beautifully made elegant and classically styled Mercedes is long gone.
It died in the 1990s IMO due to a new marketing direction.

I had an AMG C63 as a daily for 3 years. The pros are obvious and as the OP pointed out. Was a lot of fun. Problem is that it never turned off. It was poor for a gentle morning commute or a lazy 3 hour motorway drive. It just made you feel insane 90% of the time. Hard suspension, twitchy throttle, odd interior. Generally it wasn't a place that you wanted to stay in all day.
You could argue that it's my issue, but I got more tickets in that car than any before or after.

Followed the AMG with a Maserati. That was good at letting you decide between calm luxury and sporty option. But it was a Maserati and both head gaskets blew at 40k miles (warranty thankfully).

The Taycan is a good balance for me as a daily.

I haven't owned an AMG, but I have driven a few for brief periods. My impression is that they have become the modern European version of a muscle car. Fun in a way but not a balanced car in any way. The reason I personally like Porsches is that I find them, on the whole, to be remarkably balanced. Having gobs of power is no good as a practical matter if you can't use it effectively. That's why I prefer Porsche over AMG or a Hellcat for that matter.

Had a 63s AMG for a while and it was an absolute hoot in terms of theatrics, power delivery and the e-diff on the rear axle allowed for some remarkably entertaining angles, shall we say? Oh and the noise, the noise! I still don’t know how they managed to engineer that sound from a forced aspiration power plant but I’m delighted that they did. But it was never off duty, it was a skittish thing in anything but warm and dry conditions and demanded all of my attention.

I sort of miss it but then I drive the Taycan and I feel no great sense of loss.
