According to Cayenne model line executive Michael Schaetzle in a conversation with Australia's Drive, one example of the electric SUV was able to tow Porsche's own speedboat more than 150 miles on German highways. "We did a test. The Porsche boat, we towed it from near Salzburg, where it is built, to Stuttgart, and it was possible to go 250 kilometers on the motorway," he told Drive—a quote that suggests the EV presumably didn't need to charge in that span, or else it wouldn't be much of a test. (That number also means the EV would likely have needed just one mid-trip charge to complete the 235-mile run between the two cities.)

For context: back in 2022, our colleagues at Car and Driver performed a towing test of three EV pickup trucks, in which the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and GMC Hummer SUT all towed a 6100-lb camper on a flat 70-mph highway loop, and none of those vehicles was able to travel more than 140 miles under those conditions. Porsche's engineers seem more likely to have stuck to Germany's strict 62-mph towing speed limit for the highway, but even so, a 155-mile run without charging would still be impressive, especially given the Cayenne Electric's 113-kWh (gross) battery is significantly smaller than that of any of our domestic pickup trucks.

Schaetzle did not specify exactly what boat Porsche was moving, but it's presumably the electric Frauscer x Porsche 850 Fantom that set a speed record back in July. According to official Porsche numbers, the 850 Fantom alone weighs over 6100 pounds dry before accounting for a trailer; the Cayenne is rated for a towing capacity of 7716 lb, so the boat would be on the higher end of what it can move.

Porsche has not yet given an official range estimate for any trim level of the Cayenne EV, but as mentioned, it has announced the car has a 113-kWh (gross) battery capacity. Over a 155 mile drive, that means an efficiency of around 1.4 miles per kWh while towing. Combined with a 10-to-80-percent fast-charging speed of 16 minutes, that number should make the new electric SUV viable as a sole vehicle for owners that occasionally need to tow reasonably long distances.
