based on what we saw at Nurburgring and what Elon has publicly claimed, the plaid model S appears a full and substantial refresh. Completely new power train, new body styling, new aero, new battery pack (like from model 3). it’s not just a little trim and some new tires. Now whether or not...
To be clear, the next roadster amazes me in so many ways. It’s shaping up to be an enormous achievement.
but like many good things in life, it’ll be later and more expensive than originally expected.
it will be more expensive. Elon has already stated the “base” model won’t break 2s as promised and they repriced the options out from underneath people on the 2008 roadster. Par for the course with Tesla.
so, sure, you can buy the lowest end config for $200k without options, but nobody is...
the next gen roadster is going to be amazing. But it’s also not going to be available until 2021-2022 and it’s going to start at $250k+. Elon and Frank have been pretty open about it missing schedule, and given it’s state the price will be higher too.
the taycan time is on stock tires. The Tesla time sport cup 2 r. It’s certain the taycan *could* do better. I’m curious why Porsche hasn’t. I’m guessing to better sandbag Elon, but the suspension is killing me
Yeah. Unfortunately we’ll likely have to live with the weight problem for about 5 years. The solid state batteries should be production ready in time for the .2 generation
they’re 20-30% better per Kw in daily driving conditions. The model 3 is the benchmark for this, not the model S. None of the current Teslas are designed for track or high performance use. not all of the energy / range improvements are strictly battery. There’s cooling, weight, aero, and...
1. I don’t think anybody here was talking about something that stupid. We just like fast cars
2. It’s illegal in most places, and will get you arrested and your car impounded. In CA, this is not a speeding ticket. It’s a long term relationship with a lawyer and jail.
tires make a big difference on the ring and it’s not clear what the M5 was running. Impressive regardless, but it’d be interesting to a turbo S running r cup tires like the model S was.
also, the taycan is very heavy. What I wouldn’t give for a Cayman with half the battery pack :-)
This follow up article has some interesting tidbits including the tires, and off the record comments from other drivers on the track with the S proto.

This will be exciting. I’d wager against the current production model S. I don’t doubt Tesla could, but the model 3 has better tech and is lighter. The model S has largely languished.
The Model S is a pinch faster and has a solid 20%-30% better range. The brakes and handling are .... not Porsche. They aren’t bad, but i wasn’t happy with them. The recent price reduction to toss in Ludicrous mode for free makes a big difference in the top end value. it’s an excellent car...
