I got the chance to take a trip with my “old” car, the Audi RS e-tron GT, last week. It took me to Trondheim and back, about 2100 km (1300 miles). Not at all a bad experience, but it is good to come back to the Taycan. (I have written about this before, some of it is not new points, so skip whatever you wish.)

My senses and vocabulary are not precise enough to find exact words and descriptions for the differences. But I do feel them, and some of them clearly. Steering is surely different. The RS goes where I want it to when I turn the steering wheel, but it lacks the precision and a kind of "eagerness" that I feel the GTS gives me. Driving curvy roads with a Taycan is rewarding at another level. Even roundabouts are almost fun, trying to make a nice curve and position the car exactly.

Road composure and handling is also different. Comparing RS Comfort and GTS Normal driving modes (which I tend to use on long trips), the RS seems to be softer and float a bit more around, while the GTS is more precise and quicker to finish off the bumps.

The short version is that I feel the RS is more for relaxed driving and not being so involved in it. The GTS encourages active and precise driving: expecting a bit more of the driver, with the potential to give considerably more joy. Just a more competent driver’s car.

There is also the designs, where I mostly prefer the Taycan, and many smaller differences in capabilities and software options. I won’t list all of them, but the RS does not show battery state of charge as a percentage, unless you go deep into the choices of the big screen. And neither there nor anywhere else does it show the charging effect (kW). Battery temperature is nowhere - but tyre temperatures are displayable!

The Taycan lacks one display element that I find interesting in the RS: momentary consumption on a kWh/100km scale. But I can turn off the artificial sound in the GTS, it has more ear-friendly warning sounds, and the graphic designs of the displays are much clearer and better in my view.

A strange difference is the warning lamp for being too close to a vehicle ahead. The Taycan accepts a much smaller distance before it warns - in Norway-normal speeds it could be as much as half.

And with all praise for the Audi A/C buttons acknowledged, it is not nice when the temperature setting button has stopped working and it is stuck at 16 degrees centigrade. The whole button panel seems to need replacing, they say at Audi service. Something can be said for touchscreens then.

All in all, the trip was confirmation that for my driving, I made a good choice in switching from Audi to Porsche. (And the boot is bigger.)
